Milton Glaser

Iconic / Humanist American 1929 - 2020

Milton Glaser made the most reproduced graphic image in history, the I Love New York logo, and barely profited from it, which tells you everything about why he made it. A co-founder of New York magazine and Push Pin Studios, he spent six decades demonstrating that commercial design and fine art were not separate pursuits. His work is warm, humanist, and formally inventive, driven by genuine affection for the people and places his images represent.

  • The accessible image. Complex ideas reduced to their most communicable form.
  • Warmth as a design value, not a commercial concession.
  • Illustration, typography, and identity treated as a continuous practice.
  • New York as subject, muse, and audience simultaneously.
  • The public function of design taken seriously as a civic responsibility.
  • I Love New York (1977)

The most recognisable logo on earth. Designed for free as a public service. Copied forever.

  • Bob Dylan poster (1966)

Psychedelic silhouette. A moment when graphic design became genuinely countercultural.

  • New York magazine (1968)

Co-founded the publication that defined urban magazine design for a generation.

  • Milton Glaser: Graphic Design (Monograph)

Glaser's own retrospective, organized the way he thought, warmly and plainly, built on the conviction that design's job is to communicate before it impresses.
