Photographer
Abdi Ibrahim picked up a small film camera at fifteen and pointed it at his brother, sister and cousins in Seattle, self-taught from the first frame. He photographs Black and Brown subjects in their most natural states, then tilts the scene a few degrees toward the surreal, so documentary instinct and constructed idea share one picture. Stills come first for him, often shot for films he hasn't made yet, which is why his portraits for Billboard, SSENSE and Paper carry a director's sense of scene. That habit carried him from editorial and fashion into directing, where he works with Jonathan Salmon as the duo KENTEN on Vince Staples videos and Lacoste campaign films. A commissioned image for The New Yorker, Police Attack, shows how much weight the surreal edge can hold.
