I built this because the world is drowning in content and forgetting what vision actually looks like. Consider this a reminder.

My name is Benny Jackson. I built this on my own time, with my own taste, because no one was going to build it for me. That's kind of the whole point.

Masters of Sight

Dana Scruggs is one of the most vital portrait photographers working today, known for images that center Black identity with extraordinary dignity and power. Self-taught and shooting primarily on film, she became the first Black woman to shoot a solo cover for Rolling Stone. Her work refuses the voyeuristic gaze that has historically framed Black subjects in photography, replacing it with sovereignty, intimacy, and unflinching presence.

Signature Traits

Rolling Stone covers

Historic first. A Black woman shooting solo covers for the magazine. LeBron James, Chadwick Boseman, among others.
The New Black Vanguard (2019)

Featured in Aperture's landmark anthology curated by critic Antwaun Sargent. One of fifteen photographer portfolios, placing Scruggs alongside the most consequential Black image-makers working in fashion and art today. A curatorial verdict on where the medium is going and who's leading it there.
BEYOND (2022)

A collaboration with Nike exploring Black athletes as mythological figures.
The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion (Featured)

Aperture's landmark anthology curated by critic Antwaun Sargent. Scruggs is one of fifteen photographers with a dedicated portfolio, alongside Tyler Mitchell, Nadine Ijewere, and Campbell Addy. The Guardian called them 'spearheading a new aesthetic in fashion and art.' The curatorial placement says everything about where she stands.
