Everything Everywhere All at Once took that same conviction, that the sillier the premise the harder it has to work for its feelings, and used it to build one of the most structurally ambitious films in recent memory, then made it about a mother and daughter arguing in a laundromat. Two features in and they had already rewritten what audiences would accept as serious cinema, provided the seriousness was smuggled in through the absurd.
