Designer
Stefan Sagmeister is design's designated disruptor, a Viennese-trained typographer who arrived in New York and immediately started doing things with his body that other designers were doing with their computers. He carved type into his own torso. He sent AIGA conference details painted on a live elephant. He took a year off every seven years to experiment without client obligation. His work is about whether design can make you feel something, and his answer is reliably: yes, but only if it takes a risk.
Signature Traits
Major Works
AIGA Detroit poster (1999)
Conference details carved into his own skin and photographed. Still the most viscerally impactful design poster ever made.
Things I Have Learned in My Life So Far (2008)
Typography installed in public spaces worldwide. Personal philosophy as street-level visual intervention.
The Happy Film (2016)
A documentary about whether happiness can be designed. The experiment is the work.
Now Is Better (Monograph)
A meditation on time and mortality, built from the belief that work matters more once you understand exactly how little of it you get. Typographic risk-taking and data visualization in equal measure.
