Designer
Fries Vansevenant learned to draw at his grandparents' house in Poperinge, copying Dragon Ball, Goldorak, and Captain Tsubasa off the French kids' show Club Dorothée, and in a sense he has been redrawing those heroes ever since. A master's in graphic design and the better part of a decade at Seven Productions, cutting motion work for festivals, television, and games, left him technically fluent and creatively blank, until a workshop with Brazilian designer Ariel Costa sent him back to the characters he had shelved. The signature that came out of it is surgical: Zidane, Rodman, Beatrix Kiddo, and Heath Ledger's Joker splintered into hard geometric shards and reassembled as collage, proportions bent until the figure reads like a memory rather than a photograph. He researches like a kit man, down to which Predator boots Zidane wore in 2006, then plants deliberate errors, sometimes as blatant as two left feet, because a picture that is slightly wrong holds the eye longer. He lectures at Artevelde University of Applied Sciences in Ghent, the city he works from.
