Federico Salis is a Sardinian-born illustrator working out of Milan, trained in 3D effects for performance and fashion at London College of Fashion rather than in illustration, a detour he took partly so nobody could measure him against anyone else. His subject is the glossy, voluptuous figure, often cropped at the thigh or torso so the frame becomes a study of volume, painted in saturated color with the finish of vintage advertising and tattoo flash. Pin-up convention gets bent from the inside: a face melts into curves, a woman becomes a fish, and the sea keeps surfacing as a setting. Music sets the pace, with some pieces imagined alongside a soundtrack that ends up as the title. With author Alice Mastroleo he has made two tarot decks, Supernova and Super Extra Gravity, the second redrawing the Rider-Waite-Smith archetypes as Botero-like bodies.
