Hideo Kojima

Cinematic / Auteur Japanese 1963

Hideo Kojima is cinema's restless cousin who chose interactive media as his canvas and has spent four decades proving it can bear the weight of genuine artistic ambition. Creator of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, he makes games that are uncompromising in their length, philosophical density, and cinematic pretension, and he has the audience to prove that uncompromising works. He is the game developer most comfortable being called a filmmaker, and the comparison is not entirely wrong.

  • Cutscenes as directorial statements, sometimes exceeding the gameplay in duration.
  • Film references worn openly as intellectual credentials.
  • Themes of nuclear anxiety, surveillance, and memetic identity explored across decades.
  • Collaboration with film actors (Mads Mikkelsen, Norman Reedus, Lea Seydoux) as creative strategy.
  • The auteur model applied to an industrial medium that resists it.
  • Metal Gear Solid (1998)

Cinematic game design at a scale nobody had attempted. Broke the fourth wall. Still studied in design schools.

  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)

A game about information warfare and the controllability of narrative. Released in 2001. Horrifyingly prescient.

  • Death Stranding (2019)

A post-apocalyptic delivery game about human connection. Divisive. Singular. The most ambitious interactive work of the decade.
